Golf is no exception and, while there are numerous theories surrounding the beginnings of the game, it is famous that several different stick-and-ball games were played in medieval Europe. One game was "pallemaille", played in the streets of France and Italy utilizing a mallet-headed club hitting a tiny wooden ball towards a target which was either on the floor or elevated. The popularity of the game spread to Britain and the initial "palle-maille" court was built-in central London in the 17th century on a niche site known today as Pall Mall.
In Scotland, the initial written references to the game were recorded in the 15th century, when the parliament on several occasions banned golf-and other unauthorised sports-as they were interfering with the practice of archery. However, by the 16th century even the king himself was investing in golf, and by the end of the century, Pall Mall Tabak golf in Scotland had evolved in to a game resembling usually the one we play today. By 1786 the game had spread to the USA - were reports of Scottish officers playing in New York and a team have been formed in 1873 in Montreal, Canada, and it was soon given the'Royal"prefix perial, social and commercial expansions of the 19th century saw the start of a worldwide golf explosion.
The popularity of the game in the UK increased rapidly with the introduction of two competitions: the initial "Open" Championship ( which resulted in the British Open) was played in 1860 and the initial Amateur Championship 25 years later. The British Open (held each year in July) may be the oldest of the four "modern" Major Championships- the first Majors were the British and US Opens and the British and US Amateur Championships. Another three majors today would be the US open (first held in 1895 and played each year in June), the US PGA Championship (introduced in 1916 and played in August) and the US Masters, the youngest of the Majors, begun in 1934 and played in April, and the only person held at the same course each year-Augusta National in Atlanta, Georgia..
The Modern Game Today:
